The flamenco effect: Why can't toddlers resist it?
Little Alice wants go to the Ball, but she has no dress. Dressing up as a fairy princess or ballerina is all part of the healthy development of a child. Dress-up and creative play inspires kids to be able to see themselves as a completely different person, like a queen or a firefighter or a flamenco dancer! The "traje de flamenco" is the dress traditionally worn by female flamenco dancers during their performances. The movement of its majestic ruffles is said to constitute one of the most emblematic images of modern flamenco dance. The dress dates back to the mid-18th century and comprises a skirt or dress that extends into a long train of ruffles and pleats. It’s thrown into flight through a combination of dizzying turns and sharp movements by the female dancer and is often combined with “zapateo” (foot stomping) and other traditional flamenco props, including shawls and fans. Little Alice is sure to find her perfect outfit in Jávea!
Paella
Paella is a symbol of belonging to a family and the dish carries the important Spanish value of family in the day to day life. The name of the dish is not the actual food itself but refers to the wide, shallow pan that it is cooked it. Summer Paella at the pool, friends and an outdoor bar, the perfect recipe for this summer at The Sunshine House!
Finding a Farmacia
You’ve packed your shorts, dresses, swimsuit and bikini and suffered the journey to reach Spain. You’ve squeezed everyone into the hire car and got yourself safely to Jávea. You’ve picked up the keys and finally found The Sunshine House. As the holiday draws on, those mosquitos and tummy rumbles might require a visit to a chemist so it’s worth knowing that pharmacies in Spanish are known as "Farmacias" and there are many throughout Jávea, easily recognised with their large green neon crosses. There is also an emergency pharmacy rota for out of hours help. A list can be found on : http://www.farmaciadeguardiajavea.com We hope you won't need one but just in case...
Find something unique to take home with you
Rows of bright, cheerful stalls fill the Plaza de la Constitución every Thursday from 8.00-14.00 (it is best to come early so you have a chance to park your car in the underground car park). This colourful outdoor market is located in the historical centre of Jávea where it is surrounded by bars and cafes, making it the perfect Thursday outing. From fresh produce and handcrafted goods to traditional clothing, leather goods and souvenirs, Jávea’s market is a great way to experience local life in Javea and find unique, locally-made products. It is also an excellent place to sample some traditional Spanish foods and snacks. Treat yourself to some "churros" and wash them down at any of the local cafes which allow you to eat them at their tables. A great opportunity to immerse yourself in a fun and exciting atmosphere – you never know what you might find!

With its pristine beaches, vibrant Old Town, and delicious cuisine, Jávea offers the perfect backdrop for a memorable birthday celebration. And as no birthday is complete without a cake, we can highly recommend Yumies for their freshly baked creative cakes, cupcakes, brownies and sweet treats for all occasions! Christmas fever in Jávea
Christmas fever in Jávea begins on 8 December by celebrating the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and is when the Christmas lights are switched on and Christmas trees go up around the town. Whether you already have your tree up or not and whether you intend to celebrate with cava, vino or simply a can of Mahou, all of us at The Sunshine House would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas.

The Costa Blanca is a fantastic holiday destination for golfers with over 30 golf courses to choose from. Our guests recently tried out Ifach Golf Club as well as the fantastic La Sella Golf Course. Ifach is a 9 hole course, situated between Moraira and Calpe, overlooking the Peñon Ifach with fantastic sea views. Short, but very challenging, it is friendly and sociable. La Sella Golf Course, designed by two-time Augusta Masters Champion José María Olazábal in 1991, is situated at the base of the Montgó, near Denia, and will provide a great day out for any golf fanatic. It is the largest golf course on the Costa Blanca, surrounded by beautiful pine forests and always with Mount Montgó as the main view. Home to the Comunidad Valenciana European Nations Cup, La Sella and its stunning facilities is welcoming to all. Now with 27 holes, a 25-bay driving range, putting green and practice bunker, it is considered as one of the best golf destinations in the Costa Blanca. Our guests strongly recommend both.
Historic Jávea reopens its doors to the "Summer Night"
"Summer Night" in the historic area of Jávea is back this year with the intention for people to enjoy a different shopping evening and take advantage of the sales in commercial establishments. There will be games, a family gymkhana, swing space, blues and a musical atmosphere through the streets and squares in the company of the Summer Trio and Música a l'Estiu. On 28 July and 18 August, you can shop, dance, dine and have fun in the streets and squares of the old town. The campaign has the collaboration of the Jávea Town Hall and the Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Sectors Productius, Comerç i Ocupació.
Male vs Female Watermelon
When you see a slice of the perfect watermelon, your mouth is probably drooling! And where better to eat this wonderful fruit than at The Sunshine House! You may have not known this, but watermelons have genders. The "boy" watermelons, are taller and more elongated, while the "girl" watermelons are more round and stout. The boy watermelons are more watery, while the girl watermelons are sweeter! Whatever your choice, enjoy!

With peak season right around the corner, this means only one thing: to do lists! Deep cleaning, organisation, renovations, appliances and amenities check-ups, safety inspections and routine maintenance are only some of the things on our to do lists. In and around the cosy coastal town of Jávea, there are many places to spend your hard earned cash! Boutiques in and round the Arenal area host a variety of clothing, shoes and jewellery. Over in the old town of Jávea, the shops are hidden away in their narrow streets, and are suitable for strolling around and bringing some of the sights in Jávea at the same time as well. Plus the city’s outdoor market takes place here every Thursday and is a bustling market where you can experience a bit of the real Spain. If you want all the well-known brand stores in one place, a trip to the Portal de La Marina shopping centre outside Jávea is perfect, especially if you want a break from the sun and to shop indoors in cooled premises. And should you want to shop while having a big city experience, head to Valencia or Alicante. Don't forget though, that opening hours follow the traditional time based around siesta.
Feliz día de los Reyes Magos!
There is a certain charm about breaking with the usual and doing the unexpected. Christmas might be a season traditionally spent at home, with your family, in the peace and quiet of your home. Nevertheless, the holiday season also brings the opportunity to try new experiences that can be all the more striking, just because they are so different. That is very much the case with the Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day) a Spanish Christmas tradition that is marked by spectacular parades in Jávea. Holidays in Spain need not only be spent basking in the sun, in the middle of a sweltering summer's day!

Looking to celebrate Halloween in Jávea this year? On 31 October, why not head to the costume parade at 19h where the route takes you through Jávea’s streets from the Plaza de la Iglesia to the Placeta del Convent. You can then head to the nearby Plaza del la Constitutión for the Halloween Party with performances by DJ Javi Mengu, Toni BUP and La Gavi (organised by the Fogueres de Sant Joan Festival Commission and by Quinta 2023). Summer is here and in Jávea, that means hitting the beach, jumping in the pool, and enjoying the outdoors. While summer is the best time for fun in the sun, it’s important to make sure that you’re not getting too much of a good thing. Ultraviolet rays from sun exposure can cause skin damage in as little as 15 minutes and long-term sun exposure can lead to various forms of skin cancer, which, in many cases, can be preventable. So as Kurt Vonnegut wrote in his famous graduation speech which went viral on the Internet in 1997, "Wear Sunscreen"!
Looking for a nice day trip away?
We can highly recommend Guadalest, a quaint, picturesque mountain village with only about 200 inhabitants, and a much visited tourist destination on the Costa Blanca. The village appears perched on a tiny pinnacle rising into the sky which makes it look absolutely amazing. This gives beautiful views of the green valley with many other mountains in the background. The old village houses and cobbled streets make you feel like you have entered an ancient time. You will find many shops selling souvenirs, crafts and local produce such as honey, wine, handbags etc. Guadalest also has a number of small museums many of them converted from little caves in the mountainside. Don't forget to check out the view of the reservoir from the top. It is simply breath-taking!
Shhh, don't tell... hidden paradise on Spain's Costa Blanca
The Jardín de l'Albarda is a hidden jewel in La Sella, near Pedregeur which will simply blow you away. A project of Fundem, this wonderful, tranquil, peaceful place has a new surprise around every corner. With its beautiful gardens, gorgeous house, waterfall, ponds, amphitheatre, shadow house etc, it is a delightful break from the hustle and bustle of the Costa Blanca. Kids will feel like they are Alice in Wonderland while parents will fully appreciate this exquisite paradise. An amazing place to get some cool family photos!

Many of our guests have asked us from where The Sunshine House got its name?
And now, the secret is out of the bag! Our 2 year old son at the time had not yet grasped the concept that we had purchased a house in Spain and therefore always asked if we were going to "The Sunshine House".
And so it stuck and that's what the family started to call it! Because the Sunshine House is an important part of our identity and history, the talented Alan Robinson designed a logo to celebrate our past and look forward to the future.
It has now been integrated into our website and on our advertising and even stands proud at the entrance to our property.

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain... or does it?
While this is a nice quote from "My Fair Lady", it makes little sense in terms of the Spanish climate. Jávea is not prone to a lot of rain but on those rare occasions, celebrate the rain. It only means that afterwards, the sun will shine bigger and brighter than ever. One of our favourite bars, La Chabada on el Arenal looks stunning whether under the rain or sun. Only in Jávea can rain look attractive.

The season is almost upon us and here at The Sunshine House, we’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Let’s all hope that 2022 gradually brings some normality back to our lives, not just here in Jávea, but to the world as a whole.
Say it in Stones
Some of the most beautiful and best beaches in Jávea and the surrounding area are pebble beaches; Playa de la Granadella, Playa de Portitxol, Cala Blanca, Cala d’Ambolo, Caleta del Tues, just to name a few. They say that if it is important, you should write it in stone. Express yourself by creating your own work of pebble art. We did just that!

Itching to get away and soak up the late autumn sun? With average daily temperatures at 25C, you can certainly take off your coat... take off your shoes... take off your dress... turn on the lights... stand on that chair... raise your hands in the air...but please, leave your hat on! Just another yellow lemon tree?
"I wonder how, I wonder why, yesterday you told me 'bout the blue, blue sky, and all that I can see, is just a yellow lemon tree" is what German band, Fools Garden, sang about in 1995. The Sunshine House has both blue skies and lemon trees. Guaranteed! Our lemon trees exceeded all expectations this year with more lemons than one knew what to do with.

Purple rain?
If you are lucky enough to be in Jávea at this time of year, you’ll find a carpet of purple flooring the streets. Purple rain? No, the flowers of the Jacaranda trees which have dropped off individually. At this time of year these trees line the streets of Jávea, suddenly bursting forth with a nearly solid covering of lavender blue flowers making them look like trees straight out of a fairytale!

"Ho-ho-ho" has turned into "No-no-no" this year, with coronavirus prevention measures meaning everyone will experience a rather different Christmas. However, it seems that the Spanish government has confirmed that Santa Claus' travels are considered essential and that he is exempt from self-isolation. As a result, Santa Claus has permission to fly in Spanish airspace and will still be visiting all homes in Jávea this Christmas! Merry Christmas from us all at The Sunshine House.

Face masks have become mandatory throughout the Valencian Community for all people over 6 years of age, both on public roads, in outdoor spaces and in closed spaces open to the public, and Jávea is ensuring that they become trendy! Having a mask that matches exactly is a fun fashion move, but matching through colour stories is starting to happen as well. Jávea’s boutiques and market are full of stylish masks proving that the pandemic should not get in the way of one’s sense of style!

The "new normal" at The Sunshine House
As Spain re-opens its borders in the light of the Covid 19 pandemic, The Sunshine House is opening to a "new normal" of strict health and safety protocols.
We would like to inform you that we are taking every precaution to ensure your safety during this time. Our property is thoroughly cleaned and sanitised with disinfectant cleaning products and with special attention being paid to frequently touched surfaces (light switches, door knobs, taps, remotes etc.)

We are aware that many people are concerned about their bookings and the impact of coronavirus on their holiday. We understand that you may need to change your travel plans.
Current bookings
As of now, we have a special cancellation policy: You can now cancel your booking without losing your deposit. In that case, we give you the possibility to move your booking to another date of your choice subject to availability. Your previous deposit will then be used for this booking.
New bookings
When you're ready to travel, The Sunshine House is ready for you! Bookings made until 31 August 2020, will benefit from our special cancellation policy: possibility to change your dates without losing your deposit on new bookings can be used until 31 August 2021 subject to availability.

Christmas caiprinhas!
There is something of an air of extravagance to the idea of being abroad for Christmas, shunning turkey bones and dirty plates for Santa hats on the beach. Time to trade carols for caiprinhas? Jávea in the winter is just as attractive as in the summer. We can only recommend it!
Safety First!
The Sunshine House has now installed several wireless home security door/window alarms on the main exits of the villa. The alarm will be triggered immediately when someone opens the door. Useful to remind forgetful and older people that the doors are not closed and can prevent children from leaving the main house without informing an adult. Many thanks to Nikki for the tip who used the alarms when staying at The Sunshine House with her autistic son Kai. Thanks to these little gems, everyone was able to relax on holiday without worrying about anyone taking off into the pool. Activate alarms on arrival for use.

Vitamin SEA!
Tired of lying by the pool or on one of Javea's many beaches but still craving for the sun? Why not rent a kayak at La Granadella beach and explore the coastline just a few hundred yards from The Sunshine House. You'll be amazed to discover huge caves on sea level in the rock which you can enter paddling or by swimming. Or simply navigate to Ambolo beach, a pebbly beach right around the corner... which by the way is the only nudist beach in the area!

Its time for a splash!
After hibernating during the long winter months, our inflatables are out again for games in the water. Please feel free to use them during your stay at The Sunshine House. Everybody...... into the pool!
Renovations continue...
Time to re-tile the pool which sadly means saying goodbye to our good old friend Dolly the dolphin. The addition of an outdoor sun-powered shower and new anti-slip tiles on the terrace are finally bringing it all together.
Renovations in progress...
Dining 'al fresco' at The Sunshine House will now be made easier with a new outdoor kitchen just by the pool. Over the winter months we are adding a fully equipped kitchen and bar hosting a fridge to keep those drinks cold, a gas hob, sink and a brand new BBQ unit.

La Fiesta de todos los Santos
If you are lucky to be visiting The Sunshine House on 1 November, make a trip to Cocentaina, one of the most important markets in the region: “La Fiesta de todos los Santos”. This medieval market is always on All Saints Day and has been a tradition since 1346. It is extremely popular with the Spanish with over 800 stalls and half a million visitors each year. Certainly worth a visit!
Caipirinha is the new Margarita
Otro, por favor? We used to drink Margaritas at this trendy Ibiza-style beach bar called “La Siesta” which is located on the rocky stretch between El Arenal and the port area. But then we discovered their Caipirinhas and were instantly hooked. Now, not a day passes without our dose of Caipirinhas, either at “La Siesta” or at their sister bar “Chabada” on El Arenal. Whichever one you choose, both offer a fine variety of meals and drinks and, by the way, the background music is great!
A yellow hello from The Sunshine House
Help yourself to lemons from our trees. They are completely untreated, ecologically sound and some reach the size of a melon. Try them in a lemon chicken tagine or add a few slices to your G&T. Alternatively, you could squeeze and freeze them, as lemon ice cubes are the perfect addition to many soft, and not so soft, drinks.

Over the years The Sunshine House has become our second home, a home in the sun where we love to go to whenever we can. Here are the owners checking if the sea is still there.
A Spanish fishing village
Originally a small fishing port on the Northern Costa Blanca, Jávea over the past 30 years has developed into an upmarket tourist destination welcoming holiday makers from all over Europe. But Jávea is also a favourite place for people from Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia. You know that you’ve chosen the right holiday spot when people from the country enjoy it as much as you do. Jávea Council maintains a strict policy: no high rises, lots of green zones, no parking fees on the beach to name just a few. This is a view of the promenade near the port, the second one shows El Arenal promenade – of course with a drink. We call the first one the Spanish promenade because it is where mainly the Spanish swim, sunbathe, eat and drink whereas the international crowd prefer to relax in the El Arenal area.

Costa del Snow!
We heard the weather warnings but laughed.... until waking up this morning that is! Yes, it really was snowing along the Costa Blanca! Seeing an outdoor swimming pool and palm trees covered in snow just looks so wrong..... where’s the sun!
Forget the shorts and flip flops..... there wasn’t even a soul on the beach and those walking up and down El Arenal were wrapped up with hats, scarves and gloves. Jávea has been rather badly affected and the snow even managed to settle on El Arenal beach... it was like an optical illusion to see. Whereas normally people would be building sandcastles on the beach, today they were building snowmen and having snowball fights!
Inflatable fun for big and small
Every summer this giant bouncy castle can be found floating a few yards from the shore in the sea near the port of Jávea. Fun for all the family!
Breakfast à l’espagnole
This is truly mouthwatering: A typical Spanish breakfast consisting of churros con chocolate! Check out any of the eateries at El Arenal.
Pebbles are the new canvas
Its unlikely the kids will run out of things to do at The Sunshine House but just in case.... pop down to La Granadella beach and collect a “few” pebbles. Arm them with some felt tip pens and the little ones will colour away the whole day. Feel free to add them to the collection in the Dinosaur Patch.
Dinner with a view!

Fancy doing something a little bit different at Christmas and New Year? The Sunshine House is the perfect place to celebrate the holiday period. Exchange your turkey for soma paella and top it off with some delicious cava. The illusion of the three kings, is lived in every corner of Jávea with the arrival of Their Majesties The Three Wise Men of the East, in the Port of Jávea. As is tradition, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar arrive by sea aboard a fishing boat. Not to be missed!
Rock’n Roll at The Sunshine House
Brussels’ classic rock band “The Basement Apes” set up for a courtesy concert at The Sunshine House. 60+ fans danced through the night to tunes from The Rolling Stones to The Doors, from Neil Young to Little Feat.

When one house just isn’t enough
The Sunshine House is getting an extension in the form of a new apartment: El Limonero! This spacious 2 bedroom apartment, down some steps at the east side of the villa will allow for family, friends and guests to find some privacy while at the same time enjoying the commonly shared outdoors of the property with other holiday makers. With EL Limonero opening in December 2013 it is now possible to accommodate 2 families independently.
